Internews is an international non-profit organization dedicated to giving people the news and information they need, the ability to connect, and the means to make their voices heard. Since its formation in 1982, Internews has worked in more than 100 countries worldwide. Working in Sub-Saharan Africa since 1998, Internews currently has offices and projects throughout the region, with its regional office in Nairobi. The Internews USAID-funded Open Spaces Zambia project seeks to support an open, inclusive environment in which media and civil society provide accurate and impartial information that promotes participation, inclusion, and accountability.
Position Overview:
The driver will transport the employees, supplies, and equipment of Internews as assigned and assure the maintenance of the vehicles.
Description of the main duties and responsibilities:
- Drive employees as assigned.
- Assist in the pick-up and drop-off of goods and materials to support the project and Internews operations in Zambia.
- Perform minor maintenance tasks on the vehicle when necessary.
- Ensure vehicles are being duly fueled, lubricated, cleaned, serviced, and maintained.
- Be responsible for the security of the passengers, ensuring they wear seat belts at all times.
- Be responsible for the safekeeping of all vehicle equipment, tools, first aid kits, spares, etc.
- Report all maintenance needs on a regular basis.
- Complete vehicle logs.
- Assist the employees and visitors in carrying their belongings from the vehicle.
- Keep the assigned vehicle clean inside and out.
- Adhere to all safety and communication protocols.
- Assist the Operations Department with the packing, movement, and shipment of goods and materials to
- support the project and Internews operations in the country.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities:
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
- Have a clean, valid driving license and over 5 years’ driving experience.
- Proficient in the use of VHF radio.
- Must respect and be knowledgeable of all safety and traffic rules.
- Know Lusaka and its surroundings very well.
- A flexible and enthusiastic approach to work with the ability to be part of a team.
- Be willing to work outside of normal working hours.
- Be knowledgeable of vehicle insurance and regulations.
- Be able to work effectively with a team.
- Zambian nationality is required.
