Job Description

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and knowledgeable Fish Resources Management Expert to join our team. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring the sustainable management and conservation of fish resources. This role involves assessing fish populations, developing management strategies, and collaborating with stakeholders to promote sustainable fishing practices, with a particular focus on transboundary cooperation.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Assessment and Monitoring:

  • Conduct regular assessments of fish populations and aquatic ecosystems.
  • Analyze data on fish stocks, fishing practices, and environmental conditions.
  • Monitor and report on the health and sustainability of fish resources.

2. Management Strategies:

  • Develop and implement management plans and policies to ensure sustainable fishery practices.
  • Create and recommend regulations to prevent overfishing and habitat degradation.
  • Design and oversee research projects to support fish resource management.

3. Stakeholder Collaboration:

  • Work with government agencies, fishing communities, and conservation organizations to promote sustainable practices.
  • Facilitate workshops, training sessions, and outreach programs on best practices in fishery management.
  • Address and resolve conflicts related to fish resource use and management.

4. Transboundary Cooperation:

  • Engage in transboundary management efforts and collaborate with neighbouring countries on shared fishery resources.
  • Participate in international forums, working groups, and agreements focused on transboundary fishery management.
  • Develop and coordinate strategies for cross-border conservation and management initiatives.

5. Data Analysis and Reporting:

  • Analyze scientific data and prepare comprehensive reports on fishery status and trends.
  • Utilize modeling tools and statistical methods to forecast fish stock dynamics.
  • Present findings and recommendations to stakeholders, policymakers, and the public.

6. Policy Development:

  • Contribute to the development of national and international fishery policies and regulations.
  • Advocate for policies that support sustainable fish resource management and conservation efforts.

7. Compliance and Enforcement:

  • Ensure compliance with local, national, and international fishery laws and regulations.
  • Work with enforcement agencies to monitor and address illegal fishing activities.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries Science, Marine Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field. A Master’s or PhD is preferred.
Experience: Minimum of 10 years of experience in fish resource management, marine biology, or a related field. Experience in policy development, transboundary cooperation, and stakeholder engagement is highly desirable.

Skills:

  • Strong understanding of fishery science, ecosystem management, and conservation principles.
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis, data interpretation, and modeling tools.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and across borders.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Familiarity with relevant laws, regulations, and international agreements related to fisheries.

Languages: Adequate working knowledge of French and Portuguese is desirable but not mandatory.

Certifications:

  • Relevant certifications or licenses in fishery management or related areas are desirable.

Work Conditions:

  • Will involve fieldwork in various environmental conditions.
  • Occasional travel will be required to attend meetings, conferences, and field assessments.
