Position Title: Head Accountant
Location: Ndola, Zambia

Overview:
The Head Accountant is a key leadership role within the organization, responsible for overseeing all financial activities and ensuring the financial integrity of the business. This position involves managing accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, taxation, and compliance with local and international financial standards. The Head Accountant will work closely with the senior management team to support the strategic goals of the organization while ensuring effective financial planning, control, and risk management.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Financial Reporting and Analysis:
- Assist with the preparation, review, and presentation of accurate financial statements in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards.
- Analyze financial data, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow reports, and provide actionable insights for decision-making.
- Ensure timely reporting of financial results to senior management, stakeholders, and regulatory authorities, including monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
2. Budgeting and Forecasting:
- Assist with the annual budgeting process, collaborating with department heads to align financial resources with business objectives.
- Develop and monitor financial forecasts, ensuring that budget targets are met and identifying variances that need corrective action.
- Manage cash flow projections to ensure the company maintains adequate liquidity for operational needs.
3. Taxation and Compliance:
- Oversee compliance with Zambian tax laws, including VAT, PAYE, corporate tax, and other statutory obligations.
- Ensure timely submission of tax returns, payments, and any other regulatory filings as required by law
- Coordinate and manage audits (internal and external), ensuring compliance with tax and financial regulations.
4. Cost Control and Financial Management:
- Monitor and analyze operational costs and identify cost-saving opportunities to optimize profitability, especially in areas such as procurement, inventory, and payroll.
- Ensure accurate accounting of company assets.
- Oversee the management of accounts payable and receivable, ensuring timely collections and payments
5. Internal Controls and Risk Management:
- Implement, maintain, and review internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure proper financial reporting.
- Identify financial risks and propose mitigation strategies, such as diversifying income streams or implementing more effective internal policies.
- Ensure compliance with financial regulations and corporate governance best practices, proactively addressing any potential risks.
6. Team Leadership and Development:
- Lead and manage the accounting team, providing direction, mentorship, and performance management.
- Oversee recruitment, training, and development of staff to enhance their capabilities and ensure the team’s effectiveness.
- Foster a collaborative team environment, promoting accountability, continuous learning, and high performance within the accounting department.
7. Strategic Financial Decision Support:
- Provide strategic financial insights and recommendations to the executive team on, cost reduction, pricing strategies, and expansion.
- Contribute to the business strategy by evaluating potential financial impacts, advising on cash flow management, and supporting new business initiatives.
- Work alongside the financial manager and other senior leaders to identify growth opportunities and optimize financial performance.
8. Stakeholder and Vendor Relations:
- Collaborate with external stakeholders, such as auditors, tax consultants, and legal advisors, to ensure regulatory compliance and resolve any financial issues.
- Manage relationships with banks and financial institutions, ensuring the business has access to appropriate financing options.
- Negotiate and review vendor contracts, particularly regarding payment terms, credit facilities, and financial commitments.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field (Master’s degree or professional certification such as ACCA, CIMA, ZICA is a plus).
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting, finance, or auditing, with at least 2 years in a senior or managerial role.
- Strong knowledge of Zambian tax regulations, accounting standards, and financial management best practices.
- Knowledge, experience and use of SAP ERP an advantage
- Exceptional skills in financial analysis, budgeting, and forecasting.
- Strong leadership abilities, with the ability to manage, motivate, and develop a team.
- Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in financial reporting.
