Job Description

Role Overview

This position will be required to adhere to all relevant requirements, policies, procedures and legal regulations pertaining to health, safety, environment and quality, as well as finance, human resources, and any other regulations as required by the company and relevant to the level of the role and responsibilities of the function. To oversee the administrative and technical functions of the chemistry labs at Roan and Sable. To coordinate all sampling, sample preparation and analysis activities & equipment & to communicates issues to management team to ensure that plants are complying with the laid down procedures. Superintend over lab personnel, liaison with other stakeholders, look after equipment, enhance continuous improvement and ensure that quality, safety, health and environmental standards & safety procedures are followed and regularly reviewed to remain relevant.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee laboratory operations: Lead and manage the day-to-day activities of the laboratory, ensuring smooth operations, adherence to standard operating procedures, and compliance with safety protocols.
  • Develop and implement testing procedures: Design and develop accurate and reliable testing methodologies for chemical analysis, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Perform chemical testing: Conduct complex chemical analyses of raw materials, finished products, and environmental samples, using various analytical techniques and instruments.
  • Quality control: Ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results by implementing quality control measures, including regular calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.
  • Data analysis and reporting: Analyze test results, interpret data, and prepare comprehensive reports detailing findings and recommendations for further action.
  • Research and development: Stay abreast of the latest advancements in chemical analysis techniques and technologies, and develop innovative approaches to improve laboratory operations and efficiency.
  • Team leadership and management: Hire, train, and mentor a team of chemists and analysists, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities to foster a high-performing and collaborative work environment.
  • Collaboration with other departments: Work closely with other departments, such as Mining and Metallurgical, engineering and Production and technical teams
  • Ensure compliance: Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards related to chemical testing and safety, and ensure compliance with all applicable requirements.
  • Budget management: Monitor and control laboratory expenses, develop and manage budgets, and make recommendations for the procurement of laboratory equipment and supplies

Preferred candidate qualifications & experience

  • Grade 12 Certificate
  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a related field
  • A minimum of 10 years’ relevant experience in a mining set up or commercial laboratory

Operational Requirements

  • Proven experience in a senior or leadership role in a chemical laboratory in mining or related industry
  • In-depth knowledge of chemical analysis techniques and instrumentation
  • Familiarity with relevant industry standards, regulations, and safety protocols
  • Strong understanding of quality control principles and practices
  • Demonstrated leadership and team management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
  • Proficient in computer software and data analysis tools
  • Knowledge of ISO quality

Location; Role holder will be required to work between two Mine Sites Kabwe &  Ndola
