Zambart is an independent Zambian research organization with a head office at Ridgeway Campus in Lusaka. Zambart is globally renown for interdisciplinary research of excellence on HIV and Tuberculosis and has contributed to HIV and TB policy and practice at national and global levels. Zambart’s research portfolio now includes a broader scope of urgent public health issues.

Building on a long history of conducting locally relevant public health research, Zambart is taking part in a multi-country research project, funded by the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), entitled ‘Evaluating the impact of computer-assisted x-ray diagnosis and other triage tools to optimize Xpert oriented community-based active case finding for TB and COVID-19 (XACT-19).

The XACT-19 study has three components: 1) A pragmatic multi-country open-labelled Randomized Controlled Trial involving high-risk persons with suspected TB (symptomatic, and/or HIV-infected, and/or with previously treated TB, and/or with contact treated for TB in the previous two years, and/or with diabetes). The intervention is on-site Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) X-ray plus Point-of-Care (POC) GeneXpert versus   POC Xpert alone in all symptomatic (one or more of any TB symptoms) and/or HIV-infected participants; 2) A prospective observational cohort recruiting asymptomatic and HIV-uninfected individuals. CAD, POC Xpert, and TB culture will be performed in all individuals with prospective follow-ups at two and 6 months; and 3). A cross-sectional cohort with prospective follow-up of participants who are symptomatic for COVID-19.   The project is also being carried out with partners in Zimbabwe and South Africa.

In a bid to reinforce manpower in this ongoing study, we are looking to immediately fill the following position:

Position: Research Assistant

Reporting To: The Study Nurse

Job Location: Lusaka

Duration: 12 months.

The Research Assistant will be responsible for identifying eligible participants, administering informed consent to study participants, and ensuring that all study related activities are done in accordance with the study protocol and standard operating procedures. The post is based in Kanyama- Lusaka.

Roles and Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Identifying eligible participants for recruitment into the study
  • Administering informed consent procedures in line with standard operating procedures
  • Participate in community sensitization and mobilization activities.
  • Managing study activities in the community
  • Collection of blood and other laboratory samples on all enrolled participants
  • Follow-up of research participants as per study protocols
  • Completion of research data collection tools
  • Participate in study related meetings.
  • Document and report any protocol deviations immediately to the study nurse and study manager.
  • Communicate results to research participants in a professional and confidential manner.

Qualifications and experience

  • Grade twelve (12) certificate
  • Diploma in Nursing or Clinical Medicine
  • Knowledge of TB/HIV research
  • Computer literacy and ability to use an electronic data capture device (tablet)
  • Be registered with the Health Professionals Council of Zambia or the General Nursing Council of Zambia
  • Minimum of 2 years work experience. Experience in a similar will be an added advantage
    Fluency in English and one or more local languages spoken in the target community
